چکیده

Earlier this year, we reported on the contamination of a closed enteral feeding system (Isocal) 1 where Gramnegative bacilli were recovered from nutrient solutions obtained from the feeding tubes of 8/10 patients, within 24 hours of use. Our findings differed from those of laboratory studies carried out by others2 which indicated that solutions delivered by the same enteral feeding system remained sterile for at least 24 hours.

Clinical and laboratory evaluation of a closed enteral feeding system under cyclic feeding conditions: a microbial and cost evaluation.

Cyclic feeding schedules are now commonly used in conjunction with closed enteral feeding systems. Some manufacturers and clinicians have speculated that closed system cyclic feeding may promote formula contamination via retrograde movement of bacteria during the "no-flow" periods. Using both laboratory and clinical settings, our study evaluated whether retrograde bacterial movement under "no-f...

Evaluation of the bacteriological contamination of a closed feeding system for enteral nutrition.

A closed enteral delivery system consisting of a cardboard tetrapack containing the sterile ready-to-use liquid feed and an independent sterile administration set, has been devised. We found bacterial contamination within 24 hours in this system in patients on ventilatory support in intensive care. This emphasises the need for meticulous care in handling enteral feeding systems to prevent envir...

Bacterial contamination of enteral diets.

Enteral feeding solutions can be contaminated by bacterial micro-organisms already present in the ingredients, or introduced during preparation or transport, or in the hospital ward. During jejunostomy feeding without pump or filter, ascending bacterial invasion of the feeding bag is possible. In patients with lowered immune response contaminated feedings can cause serious septic clinical probl...

Prematurity and abnormal bacterial colonization are regarded as the most prevalent causes of NEC. Some studies have supported the fact that administration of probiotics decreases NEC and mortality in premature neonates. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effec...
